The practical effects in the film are the film's biggest strengths. Hatchet 3 is a horror movie that uses CG effects less than many others. Hatchet 3 has a lot of practical makeup effects and sets that result in some truly terrifying scenes in the movie.

The cast gives a strong performance and Kane Hodder standing out as the most terrifying villain. The dialogue is hilarious and cheeky that it could be like a classic 1980s horror (click blog posts) film. There are instances of humor in the film which add humour to bloody action.

Unfortunately, because the budget is so limited (reportedly $1 million), most locations that are featured in the movie are re-used locations from earlier films in the series. For instance the same boathouse was used twice within the movie. Many of these locations feel like they were reused from previous films from this series. If you've seen Hatchet or Hatchet 2, this can sometimes make the movie feel familiar.

Overall, I was impressed by Hatchet 3 even though it felt very similar to prior entries in this series--it provided lots of bloody thrills as well as entertaining performances from the actors.
